Why use an app to learn a language?

Emerging technology has provided us with enormous potential in the manner of learning these days. There are many benefits to using an application to learn a language, and most of them derive from interaction, coordinating and the immersive experience of the platform. The learning process is something that needs to be enjoyed, but also entertaining enough to captivate and retain the attention of curious young minds.

We have tested our Takallam curriculum with several groups of children aged 3-9 and have learned and fine-tuned the results to create the best possible interactive platform for these curious little ones. We defined that children learned faster when prompted with videos and visual content to stimulate recognition. Playing a game is a fantastic way to present the knowledge learned without having to use traditional testing methods. Completing a game also brought about satisfaction and pride in their work well done. The results were astounding, and the knowledge learned was truly absorbed and applied, as opposed to other Arabic language learning methods, which rely mostly on flash cards and repetition as a teaching base.

How much time should my child spend on Takallam?

When designing Takallam we bear in mind the allowed period of exposure of young children to electronics and smart devices. We made sure that our lessons make the best use of time by filling each one with the most efficient information to capture exactly what children need to learn in the most optimal way.

All videos and game times vary between 1 to 4 minutes. We recommend short lessons to make the best use of Takallam without saturating all of their available technology time. Ideally the application should be used 3-5 times a week, for about 15-20 minutes at a time. This will ensure that the lessons have enough time to be understood and enough time is allowed for reflection on what has been learned afterwards. Encourage your child to watch and repeat the videos and the games if they are showing interest in them. Repetition is a key to learning and reinforcing new skills and vocabulary.

Which age group is Takallam designed for?

Takallam is designed specifically for children aged generally between 3-9 years old, but not limited to. We teach the Arabic language in its most basic literary form, but our program was handcrafted for children who need to learn Arabic phonics and early literacy skills as a preparation stage for reading, which is crucial before attempting to read more complex texts later.

Takallam is suitable for any young child who wants to learn, reinforce or strengthen their identification of Arabic phonics, sounds, letters and the alphabet for a lifelong retention of the Arabic language in its applicable form. This can also be aimed at young children who do not have a sufficient amount of exposure to Arabic language in a home environment due to an international relocation, and would like their children

to stay rooted to their own mother-tongue as a means of identification with their own culture or even to expat families who live in Middle Eastern countries and would like their kids to learn Arabic.

Is Takallam safe?

Takallam is founded on a principle of accessibility to quality Arabic language education, using the most up-to-date resources, providing a safe, fun, entertaining platform and learning services to young learners and their parents/caretakers alike.

Curriculum Behind Takallam

How does the Takallam Curriculum work?

Takallam uses context based strategic content to teach vocabulary. Vocabulary is the core of oral language comprehension and its understanding sets a foundation to later language stages such as implementation of recognized words to sentence formation and finally into the reading stage.

While using standard Arabic, our carefully chosen vocabulary can be used and pronounced in the same manner in all Arabic dialects. As it is a base, children can relate to and apply in their daily life, both at home and later when reintroduced into a mainly Arabic speaking environment.

Traditional Arabic phonics are generally introduced using a scaffolded approach. This approach begins by identifying letters, followed by studying the sounds of the letters and how to write them. The lesson will resume by identifying easy words that can be created using these letters, using flashcards and simple rhymes. Research has proven that children can best retain vocabulary, use it naturally and with ease by associating them with its context; rather than by introducing them in association with just reading, with letters alone and without understanding its meaning.

Takallam’s approach to learning is based on exposing children to meaning and concepts by developing an interest in discovery and exploration of letters, words and relatable topics one at a time within context using phonics as a foundation. While each of these are presented with steps a child must proceed on to, there is no exhaustion of information, each step becomes an enjoyable discovery making each task manageable. Information is key but allowing the child to understand and apply this information is even more important in learning retention.

What will my child learn?

Our platform starts with phonics which gets the child speaking right away, as they can record their sounds and words. Words will be formed by associating words with pictures, these pictures will then combine themselves to form words. When the child is ready, they can then proceed to sentences. By using this method of reading phonics, we make sure that all coordination of language and comprehension is working side by side as your child is learning.

Our phonics learning system provides an animated story for each sound presented by a main character which introduces the sounds and an associated word to your child directly within the video. This leads to an immersive game to help the child understand the content they were just presented with and learn vocabulary as they take part and complete the task. This allows the child to test their knowledge of the material, as well as optional voice recording for practice.

This program is divided into 4 progressive levels based on ease of learning. Children progress through the levels until they can fully recognize, pronounce, interact and identify the alphabet in different shapes and formats, while using their new vocabulary to form comprehensive sentences.

Takallam introduces phonics, using sounds and letters within meaningful and relatable texts in order to gradually build a strong basis of language. While also focusing on standard topics, such as shapes, colors, numbers, social and emotional topics, we introduce additional topics that deal with current issues in their development state, such as caring for the environment and family bonding. Children are exposed to this vocabulary and within a context they can apply their knowledge of the Arabic language into present situations. The use of games, videos, songs and activities will pique their interest and are designed specifically to adapt to their level or learning style.

What is parents/teacher support section and where I can find it?

As well as entertaining your child while teaching the Arabic language, TAKALLAM also includes videotaped training sessions for parents and teachers. You can be sure you will feel like an expert in no time at all. The training provides information about the latest teaching methodologies, practical teaching tips, and games ideas for individual and group work, to supplement all your child has learnt. The parent/teacher support section is inside the app for ease of use to everyone.

Organization of the Takallam Curriculum

Takallam’s curriculum is made up of 28 sections each containing 9 levels to conquer. In addition to the core components, children will also find seasonal content as well as bonus activities in parents/teacher support section.

How can I track the child progress?

As a parent/teacher you can view and track the child’s progress and achievements via the app itself in the setting section. Make sure to celebrate your little one’s achievements with them!

Does Takallam use standard Arabic?

Yes, Takallam uses standard Arabic as a main basis for teaching Arabic. In order to have a more meaningful learning experience and to make sure children will be able to relate to their learning in real life, we have carefully selected vocabulary that is pronounced in the same way in different dialects as standard Arabic. By using this practice, we ensure that children will be able to apply the Arabic language in its practical implementation in daily life, as well as later on.

Why doesn’t Takallam translate to other languages?

Takallam can be downloaded in both Arabic and English languages. However, Takallam is a full immersion Arabic learning program so the learning content is mainly and will always use the Arabic language as a mean of communication for teaching. Learning how to use a language naturally and effectively is best done through seeing it in context and associating it with other topics and themes.
